Marking flags and paint are used in a wide array of industries to keep job sites safe by alerting workers to the placement and type of underground utilities present. They can also indicate proposed purposes for specific areas on the site. There are a variety of colors, each with a different meaning. Here is a quick key to the various marking colors and what they signify:
PINK - Temporary Survey Markings
WHITE (or BLACK on snow) - Proposed Excavation
YELLOW - Gas/Oil/Steam, Petroleum, and Gaseous Materials
BLUE - Potable Water
ORANGE - Communications, Telephone, Cable TV, Alarm and Signal Lines
PURPLE - Reclaimed Water, Irrigation and Slurry

Marking products are also available that are either pre-printed or custom printed for their specific purpose, making identification even easier.
