Use Sand/Snow Fencing to Help Prevent Beach Erosion

June 11, 2013

Sand fencing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent beach erosion. This wooden barrier helps the water's edge in a number of ways:

Controlling Wind Speed
The fencing prevents beach erosion by controlling wind speed.  The fence slows the wind and generates sand deposition as the slowing wind drops the sand it is carrying.  The slats in the fence also act to "stop and drop" sand being carried by the wind.

Re-directing Foot Traffic
Sand fencing also addresses beach erosion caused by human foot traffic. Properly placing the fencing to redirect foot traffic on coastal banks away from areas that are easily eroded protects and preserves the beach.

Encouraging the Growth of Beach Grass
Beach grass assists in erosion prevention in a similar way to fencing by stabilizing existing dunes and reducing wind velocity.  The grass however, is delicate and repeated foot traffic will destroy the plants.  Sand fencing helps protect the grass so that together, fencing and the natural grass barrier work together to discourage erosion.
