A properly installed and maintained silt fence is the most effective means for temporary sediment control while a project is under construction. Proper maintenance is key to insure that the fence is working as it should to prevent run-off of harmful sediment and to avoid more costly repairs. Use these tips to be sure your fence is working optimally:
Inspect the Fence at Regularly - Particularly After Rainfall
It is critical to check the fence, especially after each rainfall as sediment and other materials tend to accumulate during storms. If there is straining of the fence due to increased sediment accumulation, remove sediment from those areas. Doing so will extend the life of the fence.
Remove Sediment at Intervals
Sediment must also be removed once the level reaches one quarter to one third the height of the fence. This will help the fence function more efficiently to prevent run-off. Additionally, sediment must be removed when the silt fence itself is taken out after the job is completed.
Repair as Necessary
Look for gaps and tears along the fence. If any are found, replace and/or repair the fabric to ensure the fence remains in good working condition.
