Exposed protruding steel reinforcing bars (or rebar) is one of the most dangerous hazards on a construction site. According to OSHA statistics, 61% of construction accidents can be attributed to impalement from rebar. But there are steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate rebar injuries:
1) Fall protection is the first line of defense against impalement from rebar. Be sure to wear properly-fitted harnesses/lanyards to ensure that a fall does not end in disaster.
2) Rebar caps are also effective in preventing injuries from exposed steel. These caps can be easily placed on top of rebar to cover the ends. The caps can also be covered with pieces of lumber, providing an extra layer of protection against impalement. Mushroom capped rebar caps can be placed on exposed steel to prevent minor scratches and injuries.
3) Bending rebar so that exposed ends are no longer upright can also be effective in preventing injuries and impalement.
