Recent statistics show that more than 700,000 work-related eye injuries occur every year with approximately 100,000 of these injuries resulting in temporary or permanent vision loss. The good news is, that according to the National Society to Prevent Blindness, 90 percent of eye injuries are preventable.
The first line of defense in reducing eye injuries is to wear protective eyewear. This simple step can prevent up to 90 percent of eye injuries. A wide array of protective eyewear is available and the type of safety eye protection you require depends on your work environment. Glasses with side protection, or side shields, are best if you are working in an area that has particles, flying objects, or dust. If you are working with chemicals, goggles will provide optimal protection. And finally, if your work environment places you near radiation welding, lasers, or fiber optics, you must use task-specific safety glasses, goggles, face shields, or helmets designed for that purpose.
