It happens every year--that sudden unexpected day where Fall's crisp but mild temperatures take a steep plunge into freezing or near freezing weather. If you work outdoors, being prepared for that sudden cold snap is critical since prolonged exposure, even in temps above freezing, can lead to hypothermia. To prepare for the cold, make sure you have these essentials:
Boots - Look for waterproof boots with slip-resistant soles. Selecting boots which feature mildew resistant liners and reinforcement at high-stress points add to durability and long wear.
Bomber Jacket or Parka - Warm, high visibility outerwear is key for outdoor work. Look for jackets/parkas with a waterproof exterior and reinforced seems for strength and resilience. Outerwear with detachable hoods or hoods that can be tucked away into the collar add versatility in changing weather/working conditions.
Winter Liners - Liners add layer of warmth under a hardhat and assist in keeping heat from escaping the body through the upper extremities. For especially cold days, choose a liner with an extra long nape to keep the neck area from being exposed. Liners with a fleece and/or sherpa interior add additional comfort and warmth.
