Must-Have PPE for Welders

November 30, 2015

Welding is one of the most high-risk occupations. From electric shock and fire to exposure to fumes and explosions, welders are vulnerable to a vast array of injuries. The most common injury by far is burns to the skin and eyes. The welding arc can reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and sparks created by the arc can travel up to 35 feet away from the welding space. Fortunately, with caution and the proper PPE, injuries from these dangers are preventable. With that in mind, here are four crucial items to have on hand before completing any welding task:

1) Flame Resistant Clothing and/or Vest
Durable flame resistant clothing and/or welding vest is crucial to protect the body from sparks and splatters. Be sure the garment meets ANSI standards for proper protection and look for one that is flame resistant for the life of the garment, even after washing.

2) ANSI-Approved Welding Headgear or Visor
Because the eyes and head are particularly vulnerable to injury from sparking, having an ANSI approved welding helmet or visor is a must. The helmet or visor should meet the requirements of ANSI Z87.1. Check to see which type of protection your job specific job requires.

3) Flame Resistant Welding Cap
If using a visor, flame resistant welding caps are essential to keep the scalp protected. Be sure to purchase a high-quality the cap that is not only flame resistant, but one that fits securely.

4) Burn Kit
Even in the most careful circumstances, accidents do happen. Be prepared with a commercial/industrial burn kit. Be sure the kit includes burn ointments that contain no lidocaine or benzocaine which can cause an allergic reaction.

Finally, be sure to avoid rolling up sleeves or pants as hot metal can get trapped in the folds. For the same reason, where pants outside work boots to prevent particles from being lodged into boots. Using these tips can help protect against welding risks and preserve your livelihood.
