How to Choose the Proper ANSI Protection

May 24, 2015

Passing cars and heavy equipment present an ongoing danger on any construction site. Many times, high-visibility vests and clothing are often the first, and perhaps the only, thing a machine operator or motor vehicle operator can discern in conditions such as inclement weather or darkness. And because danger levels vary depending on the work, it's important to be sure you are wearing safety clothing specific to the job. ANSI/ISEA 107 is the standard for protective apparel which is categorized in classes 1, 2, and 3. Here are some quick guidelines to help choose the correct class of hi-viz wear for your job:

CLASS 1 is used when:
    •    There is ample space between a worker and vehicular traffic
    •    Workers are conspicuous against backgrounds that are not visually complex
    •    Full and undivided attention may be given to approaching traffic
    •    Speeds of moving equipment and motor vehicles do not exceed 25 mph
CLASS 2 is used when:
    •    Workers are involved in duties where their attention is diverted from approaching    vehicles
    •    Bad weather reduces visibility
    •    Workers are less conspicuous against a complicated background
    •    Speeds of moving equipment and motor vehicles range from 25 mph to 50 mph
CLASS 3 is used when:
    •    Workers must focus all of their attention on the work and not the traffic
    •    Workers must be conspicuous through a full range of motion/duties performing the task
    •    Speeds of moving equipment and vehicles exceed 50 mph
