Having the Right Rain Gear Keeps Workers Healthy and on the Job

February 25, 2013

Nearly 150 million missed work days a year across the United States are due to illnesses such as colds and flu. Interestingly, with those who choose to go to work sick, colds and flu account for 60% lost productivity - more than what would be lost by simply taking the day off. Unfortunately, many workers feel they cannot take time off for fear of lost wages - or a lost job. It's critical then, to insure that you stay healthy.

For those who work outdoors, one of the easiest, most effective ways to keep healthy and avoid lost time at work, is to simply have the proper rain gear - and to have it available when needed. This is especially true during the colder months since once the body is wet, it loses heat 25 times faster than when dry in the same temperature. Losing body heat in this manner not only increases the chance of getting colds and flu, but also hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related ailments that not only result in discomfort, but lost time at work and, in the worst cases, permanent injury.

Look for rain wear that is entirely waterproof and made from 100% non-conductive material to protect from electrical hazards that may accompany wet weather. Working in certain conditions may also require rain wear that meets ANSI standards. Such rain gear is enhanced with both high visibility colors and reflective tape for extra protection.

Here are some other precautions you can take to help prevent colds and flu:

- Wash hands regularly or use a hand sanitizer
- Avoid touching your nose or eyes after being in contact with someone who has a cold/flu
- Maintain a healthy diet
- Exercise
- Get plenty of sleep
- Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water each day
- Avoid stress (if at all possible)
