Do You Have the Right Number of Wet Floor Signs?

January 28, 2013

Slips, trips, and falls are one of the leading causes of workers' compensation claims over the last several years. Additionally, they are second only to motor vehicle accidents as the most frequent accidents related to personal injury. In the winter months in particular, snow, sleet, and ice make slips and falls much more frequent in the workplace. It is important to both protect workers and your business by insuring that proper signage is used in every high-risk area where slippery surfaces might exist.

Interestingly, while many businesses are aware of the need for "Wet Floor" signage, many do not have the sufficient number of floor safety signs required.  According to the Occupational Health & Safety Administration, "If a building has three entrances, there should be a minimum of four to five wet floor signs available. This would allow a wet floor sign for each entrance and two extra to be used in the event a spill occurs somewhere within the facility while the other signs are being used." When businesses ensure that the correct amount of signs are available, they are able to reduce, and even eliminate, the incidence of injuries from slips and falls.
