As Fall slowly gives way to Winter, freezing temps will soon be upon us. For those who work outdoors, being prepared is critical. Approximately 600 deaths per year in the United States are attributed to hypothermia. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent cold-related illness and injuries.
Wearing the proper clothing is the first line of defense. It is particularly important to cover areas such as the head and feet.
A significant amount of heat can be lost through the head so it is vital that the head is covered in cold conditions. In extreme temperatures, pay particular attention to areas such as the ears, neck, nose, and mouth as these areas can easily succumb to frostbite.
Additionally, proper footwear is essential. Choose boots with insulation for optimum warmth and be sure they have good traction to avoid slips and falls on wet or icy surfaces. Be sure footwear is waterproof as this will prevent heat loss leading to frostbite and/or other cold-related injuries.
