Be Prepared for Harsh Summer Storms

July 06, 2015

In many parts of the country, summer storms are hitting hard. And while that may be good news for the greenery, it can cause unsafe conditions for those who work outdoors. Here are some things to watch for when storms hit:

Slips and Falls
Even a slight amount of rain decreases traction on steps, walkways, scaffolding, and roofs so it's important to be sure you have the proper footwear, such as slip resistant boots. Placing non-skid abrasive tape on steps and walkways before a storm hits also helps decrease slips and falls.

Wet Weather PPE
Having protective clothing such as raincoats and water-resistant footwear is essential on wet days. But roadway work can be especially dangerous as visibility is significantly reduced for motor vehicle operators. It's crucial to have the proper ANSI Hi-Vis weather gear to keep both dry and safe.

Steel Structures and Electrical Wires
Exposed steel structures and cranes can act as lightning rods in thunderstorms so be cautious and take cover. Wet weather also increases the chance of live wires or wires that may become live so be watchful of any electrical lines in the area.
