Be Prepared for Fall's Quickly-Changing Temperatures
October 05, 2015
Autumn is a magnificent time of year. But along with the falling leaves, temperatures can plunge from warm to freezing with alarming speed, catching you off-guard. For those who work outdoors, preparing for this drop in temperatures is crucial in prolonged exposure to the elements. Here are two basics you'll want to have at the ready during the season:
- Rainwear: It doesn't take freezing temperatures for hypothermia to set in, particularly in wet conditions where the body loses heat approximately 25 times faster in water than in air of the temperature. Rain gear is essential, particularly as sudden storms are common this time of year. Waterproof footwear with slip resistant soles are best in providing traction on slippery, wet leaves. Additionally, rain suits and raincoats made of PVC/Polyester offer the best protection in wet conditions. Be sure to select ANSI Class 3 Hi-Viz rainsuit if working near moving vehicles whose speed is 50mph or more.
- Outerwear: For days that are moderately cool, a soft-ANSI fleece jacket will get you through the work day. But for colder temps, a Hi-Viz bomber jacket with good insulation provides the protection you need from the elements. A zip-away hood is a great feature to look for as it can simply be pulled out for extra windy days. As the weather turns even more cold in late Autumn, a Hi-Viz Winter Parka is a must for extended work outdoors.
Don't let Fall's mercurial weather catch you unprepared! Be sure to have your chilly-weather essentials before the first cold snap of the season!
