7 Easy Steps to Ladder Safety
April 26, 2016
Because falls construction are the number one cause of deaths and injury to workers, OSHA began it's National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. This annual campaign is designed to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in the industry. Falls from ladders are one of the most common ways fatalities and injuries occur, but these falls are preventable with the following guidelines:
- Select the proper ladder for the job.
- Be sure to inspect the ladder every time you use it. Examine rails, rungs, feet and rung locks or spreaders for wear or damage.
- Secure the ladder making sure you have solid level footing.
- Avoid overreaching by positioning the ladder near your work.
- Maintain three-points of contact with the ladder at all times.
- Always face the ladder and do not stand on the top four rungs of an extension ladder or the top two rungs of a stepladder.
- Use a rope or hoist materials to the work area. Do not attempt to carry tools and/or materials while climbing the ladder.
