6 Reasons to Wear a Hard Hat

April 27, 2015

On a construction site, the head is one of the most vulnerable areas of the body with eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and brain all subject to injury from falling debris and other worksite hazards. One of the easiest and most effective means to protect the head is the simple use of a hard hat. Here are 6 reasons they should be an integral part of your work gear:

  1. The rigid shell deflects impact from debris or other materials and the suspension system inside acts as a shock absorber preventing injuries to the head and neck.
  2. Hard hats provide more ventilation, making them cooler to wear than even a baseball cap.
  3. Wide brim hats offer increased sun protection and nape protectors can be attached to provide added protection for the neck.
  4. Face shields, goggles, hoods, and hearing protection can also attach to hats providing extra protection for the face, neck, and shoulders against hard matter or potentially dangerous chemical splashes, spills and drips.
  5. The bright colors also make workers more highly visible, thus reducing the chance of accidents.
  6. Some hats even serve as an insulator against electrical shocks.

For optimum protection, be sure to replace a hardhat if it sustains impact, even if you can't visibly see the damage.
