5 Easy Steps to Prevent Falls While Working at Heights

January 18, 2016

Working at heights may be an unavoidable part of a construction job, but falls don't have to be. Use these tips to prevent fall-related injuries:

  1. Use a fall arrest system - this is one of the most effective and efficient ways to prevent injuries from falls:
  2. Make use of elevated platforms or aerial lifts if the job permits. These provide more stability than a ladder and facilitate safer work at heights:
  3. If you must use a ladder, be sure that it reaches approximately 4 feet above the location where work will be performed and never overreach the work area as this can cause you to lose your balance - move the ladder as you work;
  4. Be sure the ladder's steps are secure and the ladder does not have loose or damaged parts. Common sense also dictates to avoid using metal ladders when there is significant wind or a storm.
  5. Wear a tool belt to keep hands free while navigating up and down the ladder.
